Laurie Virtusio Selected as Coordinator of Expanded Learning Programs

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) is pleased to announce the selection of Laurie Virtusio as the coordinator of expanded learning programs. This position will focus on expanding high quality before and after school programs for elementary students throughout the District. Virtusio has more than ten years experience in elementary education and most recently served as Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for English language development and previously was a TOSA providing reading intervention in Beverly Hills Unified School District and. She also has served as an elementary teacher in other southern California schools. Virtusio has worked with a variety of parent groups, including the site English learner advisory committee, the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) and was an active participant in school site council. She has provided professional development to staff, and helped establish a parent liaison group for non-English speaking parents to better engage with schools about their child’s education. Virtusio also served as a part of the California State literacy plan team panel. “We are excited to welcome Laurie to our District and are confident that her collaborative approach and experiences will support our elementary team in ensuring positive student outcomes,” said Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education John Drake. “Her experience in bringing together diverse groups to share the responsibility of providing an outstanding whole-child education is commendable and we are excited to have her lead our expanded learning programs,” he said. Known for her attention to detail, ability to make connections and develop effective programs for students, Virtusio is excited to join the team at NMUSD and looks forward to helping improve student achievement and foster a positive learning environment. Virtusio obtained her Doctorate in Education from ; her Administrative Credential from ; her Masters Degree in Reading Education with Reading Specialist Credential from ; and her Masters in Education, inclusive of her multiple subject credential from .
