California Governor Gavin Newsom made an announcement today (July 17, 2020) regarding the start of school, which includes guidance that schools cannot physically reopen for in-person instruction until that county is no longer on the State Monitoring List for 14 consecutive days. Currently, Orange County is on the State Monitoring List. The Governor also announced additional criteria for reopening schools for in-person instruction in counties that are not on the State Monitoring List. Today’s announcement provides all California school districts with clearer guidance on when and how to safely physically reopen our schools. What are the next steps for Newport-Mesa USD? At this time we will fully review the newly issued state guidance and will make a determination for our district based on the criteria. As announced previously, the level we will use for the start of the school year within our 3-Level Planwill be determined at least two weeks prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year. If Orange County does not meet the state criteria to allow for reopening, NMUSD would implement 100% distance learning which is Level 3 of the 3-Level Plan and comply with the revised state guidelines. The 2020-21 school year starts on August 24 ,except for Early College High School which starts on August 12 . Meanwhile, NMUSD continues to develop our Parent Choice Virtual Learning School and which allows our district to adapt to the changing circumstance and switch to distance learning 100%, modified in-person instruction with social distancing, or in-person 100% when conditions get better and allowable under the guidance from the state, county and local health officials. Thank you for your support and understanding and we will continue to keep you updated of all these important decisions. Russell Lee-Sung Acting Superintendent Newport-Mesa Unified School District
